Cordial Program

MEET THE CORDIAL PROGRAM

The IDCBIS with the only public Umbilical Cord Blood Bank in the country, continues the development of the Cordial program, to encourage the collection of umbilical cord blood with nursing mothers in different regions of Colombia.

Genetically different populations are addressed, which increases the likelihood of compatible donors for patients with similar genetic characteristics.

Bogota and Medellin performed the first transplant of stem cells from umbilical cord blood from a colombian donor

Scientific event without precedents the most important in the country: the Health Secretariat of Bogotá through the District Institute of Science, Biotechnology and Innovation in Health – IDCBIS – and the group of bone marrow transplants of the Pablo Tobón Uribe Hospital in Medellín, managed to save the life of a 10-month old child who suffered from a rare immune genetic disease, which prevents the body to defend itself from infections.
This complex procedure, carried out by specialists of the highest scientific and professional qualities from Antioquia’s capital, was possible thanks to the donation of stem cells from the umbilical cord of a nursing mother in Bogotá, which were obtained, processed and cryopreserved by the first Public Umbilical Cord Blood Bank of the IDCBIS.
