Umbilical Cord Blood Bank

The Umbilical Cord Blood Bank of the IDCBIS, is a center responsible for the selection of donors and under strict quality criteria – collection, processing, analysis, storage, classification and distribution of blood from the umbilical cord for patients who require a transplant as part of a specific treatment.

WHAT IS THE UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD?

It is the blood that circulates through the blood vessels of the placenta and umbilical cord. It is rich in stem cells, which are able to generate all types of blood cells: white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. This blood remains in the blood vessels and it is discarded, together with placenta after delivery.

  • Healthy pregnant women, over the age of 16, with full knowledge of the Cordial Program and will of donation.
  • Pregnant women with adequate prenatal control and without potentially transmissible diseases through the blood.
  • Mothers of healthy babies without suspicion of congenital diseases.
  • Candidates for vaginal delivery or cesarean section, as long as they have no complications during the procedure and will be cared for in a health institution participating in the program.
  • Women that, in addition to the donation, allow taking a small sample of blood, to be analyzed to rule out the presence of infectious diseases.

WHO CAN BE SAVED?

More than 20 years of research has shown that the blood from the umbilical cord is effective for the treatment of different diseases, such as those that affect the blood, the immune system, the metabolism and the bone marrow.
Throughout the entire world, each year more than 40,000 transplants of stem cell are carried out (bone marrow or umbilical cord blood), both in children and adults.

WHY DONATING UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD?

  • These are obtained through a procedure which is simple, painless without risk to the donor.
  • Its availability is immediate, which decreases the patient waiting time to receive the transplant.
  • The transplant has less risk of infectious diseases transmission and immune rejection, since it comes from a newborn.
  • The possibilities to find a compatible donor increase for local patients, since there are stored units of genetically similar population.

WHERE CAN YOU DONATE?

Currently, the Cordial program for umbilical cord blood donation is available in maternity services from the following institutions:

  • Hospital Occidente de Kennedy
  • Meissen Hospital
  • El Country Clinic
  • Suba Hospital

High Resolution HLA Typing Service

hla

The correct and exact typing of the HLA system and the compatibility criteria are the main factors for the success of the transplant. The typing is done with new generation sequencing techniques (NGS) in an international laboratory accredited by the ASHI (American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics)
